The historical center of Skiathos is its capital - the city of the same name. There are numerous old buildings on its territory; the stroll through the picturesque streets will give a lot of impressions. Special attention should be paid to the house of famous writer Alexandros Papadiamantis. It was converted into a museum; now it introduces the life and works of the painter to visitors. Nearby is the picturesque Bourtzi peninsula where the ruins of an old castle are situated.
For years, it has been the most important fortifications on the island and has repeatedly defended it from invaders. Today the castle is partially restored; it is home to the town library and the theater, which regularly hosts various cultural events. In the upper part of the city there is a famous religious landmark, the Church of the Three Hierarchs. There are lots of interesting stories and legends about it.
The island is famous for its natural attractions. Must-see destinations of many tourist programs are Skotini-Spilia and Galaz-Spilia. Literally, their name can be translated as ‘a dark grotto’ and ‘a blue grotto.’ The internal atmosphere of caves fully complies with those beautiful names.
