Not far from the capital there is the picturesque town of Weimar that has gained the status of European Capital of Culture in 1999. The German National Theatre and the monument to Goethe and Schiller located at the entrance are among the most important symbols of the city. The old town is justifiably proud of its magnificent museums; there are 27 of them in Weimar. Travelers who wish to see unique medieval buildings are sure to visit the town of Eisenach, where there is the old fortress of Wartburg that is another world-scale landmark. The town of Gotha boasts the famous Friedenstein castle; it was built at an incredibly beautiful place.
