The town's most famous building is the Schwerin Castle located on a small island in Schweriner See. For centuries the Schwerin Castle was the home for the Dukes of Mecklenburg. Nowadays the Castle serves as the seat of the regional parliament.

Another tourist attraction is the ancient Schwerin Cathedral built in 1260. This building underwent several changes and was completed only in 1416. Schwerin Cathedral is an excellent example of brick Gothic architecture and the only monuments originating from the medieval times.

In the old quarter of Schwerin you can visit Market Square with its wonderful gabled houses, old town hall and the statue of lion. If you are fond of art and music, you will be interested in the town's baroque Opera House and the State Art Museum. It has a collection of works by Rembrandt, Ruben and other French, German and Dutch artists from the 17th-19th centuries.
