Plenty of attractive architectural sights are located in close vicinity to the Schillerplatz square. One will see there the ancient Fastnachtsbrunnen fountain and the Electoral Palace being the residence of prince-bishop Johann Friedrich von Ostein which was built in the 18th century. Fans of the dramatic art will love the Staatstheater Mainz set on the Gutenberg square or Gutenbergplatz. It can justly be named the most beautiful theater of city.
By its outline the theater resembles the Roman Coliseum as its halls and the frontage are round shaped. Among religious sights of the city the St. Stephan Church is worth noticing. It was built by the end of the 10th century. For a rather long period of time its bell tower was the highest construction on the territory of the city. The large windows of the church are now decorated with ancient painting.
