One of the most renowned historical landmarks located in the suburbs of the city is the Valmagne Abbey (Abbaye de Valmagne) which was established in the middle of the 12th century an is at present an established place of holding of various cultural events. The last scale renovation and reconstruction of the abbey building was held in the 14th century. Today travelers may enjoy the majesty of the ancient building and observe its interior.
An architectural monument of the later period is the Basilica of Notre-Dame des Tables. Its construction was started in 1707 and lasted for almost 40 years. Graceful building of the Basilica has embodied the best traditions of baroque style. The Basilica neighbors a large magnificent square. Montpellier and its suburbs have preserved several majestic castles and palaces most of which still appear in their initial look and state.
