The region is rich cultural traditions; it enjoys continued popularity among fans of event tourism. Perpignan alone hosts several major holidays during the year. Semaine Sainte et la Procession de la Sanch is one of the biggest cultural events and celebrations in the region; the holiday has been spent first in the early Middle Ages and since than many traditions haven’t changed.
The main event is a religious holiday procession of penitents; this process may seem quite strange to foreign guests. All marchers are dressed in special costumes called caperutxa that consist of spacious capes of red and black colors with peaked caps covering face. This outfit was used during the celebration in the 15th century. The procession is accompanied with songs and drums. Travelers won’t see such an event in any other city in the country.
