Next to the cathedral there is the Bishop's Palace. This historic building was once converted into an interesting museum. It holds a rich collection of objects of church utensils and fine jewelry. On the square in front of the cathedral there is another interesting historical object, the city well, which has remained the main source of fresh water for local residents for many years. Despite the fact that now the island doesn’t strive of fresh water shortage, locals still treat old wells with a great respect and care about them as if they were the most valuable historical objects.
The old Arsenal built in the late Middle Ages is among other noteworthy attractions of Hvar. The first public theater in Europe has been opened on its second floor in the early 17th century. Fans of exploring historical sites are recommended to see the Venetian fortress located on a small hill. These places offer beautiful views of the island's capital and its surroundings.
Stari Grad is also characterized by its numerous historical sites, as the city has retained a great number of picturesque medieval streets. The area of the old city is considered to be an important tourist attraction of world class. The beautiful church of St. Stephen, the old Tyrdal fortress and numerous ruins of the Roman Empire are among the most noteworthy buildings.
