Depending on which definition is used, the São Paulo metropolitan area is ranked as either the first or second most populous in the Americas, just behind Mexico City. The subway system covers only some areas of the city.
The main interest of the region is influence of different neighborhoods with their special Italian, Japanese or Arabic influences.
