Graz city center – 'the Old Town' – is included in the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. A walk through the Old Town is an excursion to past times. There are over 1000 buildings from different epochs. You can explore this area by foot because the majority of popular attractions are situated within walking distance of Hauptplatz, the main square.
The most important sights in the Old Town are the Landesmuseum Johanneum, a complex of museums; Dom (cathedral), a wonderful example of Gothic architecture; the Alte Galerie with its excellent collection of paintings and sculptures from the Romanesque to the Baroque period; the Neue Galerie with paintings from the 19th-20th centuries; the Landhaus where the parliament of Styria resides; armoury Landeszeughaus; and Gemaltes Haus ('painted house'). The Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II includes the grave of Ferdinand II and his wife as well as and a church dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria.
